Recipe: The BEST Yam Fries Ever!

Recipe: The BEST Yam Fries Ever!

Are yam fries not the best food ever? They’re sweet, salty, soft, crispy, and utterly delicious! If I had to pick, I would ALWAYS choose yam fries over regular fries (although I know that’s a controversial statement lol).

I know a lot of people struggle with how to make their yam fries actually taste delicious when they make at home. I did for many years but I officially cracked the code and I cannot wait to share with you!

Here are a few notes:

  • The secret ingredient for crispy delicious yam fries is arrowroot starch (also known as powder). You should be able to find it from most grocery stores / health food stores
  • Another secret is to ensure your yams do NOT touch each other on the baking sheet. You want them to have enough room to get crispy
  • Parchment is optional but recommended. I used to think they didn’t get crispy enough with parchment but if you keep them baking long enough they definitely should!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large yams, cut into fry shape pieces
  • 2-3 Tbsp. arrowroot starch
  • 1 and 1/2 Tbsp. olive oil
  • Generous few pinches of salt (approx. 1/4 tsp.)

Instructions:

  • Pre-heat your oven to 400F (convection)
  • Chop your yams into fry shape pieces (no need to peel!)
  • Place your yams into a large bowl and then coat with olive oil. Next add the arrowroot starch. Add 2 Tbsp. and mix. Your fries should be lightly coated but not completely covered in the arrowroot powder. If they are looking too oily or not dusted enough – add another 1/2 to 1 Tbsp. of it.
  • Place one by one on a baking sheet covered with parchment. The parchment is optional but definitely helps prevent them from sticking. The yams should NOT be touching each other. There should be at least a few cm between each one. If they do not all fit on the baking sheet this way, save for a second batch or use a second baking sheet. You want to be sure they have enough space. This is what gets them crispy!
  • Pop them in the oven and bake for 14 minutes. Then give them a check. If they are starting to brown on one side, give them a flip. Bake for another 14 or so minutes. But check after the 8 minute mark as some ovens can cook faster than others.
  • Remove from oven and serve with whatever you desire. I love a tahini sauce with them!
